As an edtech coach, we want the teachers with whom we work to feel empowered, not disempowered and evaluated. One way we lower teachers’ affective filters is to shift our focus from the educators to the students.
Tips to Empower Students:
- Showcase Student Work – When you enter classrooms, ask students if you can take pictures of them learning. Post these images on social media (if you have parent/guardian permission), display student deliverables on a school website…be sure that students feel empowered to create for an authentic audience!
- Give Students Options – Choice boards are a great way to empower students to demonstrate their learning in various ways, and to show off their strengths! When we model multiple ways of demonstrating understanding, we send the message that we value teacher choice as well.
